  • Homeless residents in Prince George find happiness — and food — cultivating community garden (CBC) PRINCE GEORGE STORY #brilliant #moreplease "This fall, there will be vegetables to harvest from a community garden in downtown Prince George that is being cared for by avid gardeners who live in a homeless encampment there. The Moccasin Flats garden was started by local advocate April Ottesen, who is helping homeless people in the community grow their own food."

  • Dartmouth woman transforms 1970s speedboat into 'beautiful' backyard pool (CBC) DARTMOUTH STORY When can we come over? "One Dartmouth, N.S., woman has decided that having water inside a boat doesn't have to be cause for alarm. After about a month of work, Olivia Kendall says she's completed turning an old motorboat into a backyard pool. 'It looked really beautiful. It was obviously very old,' Kendall said of the boat. 'But I thought if it could keep water out, it could probably keep water in.'"

The aptly named pumpkin toadlet lacks an ability most frogs are known for. While it can get off the ground, its airborne excursions consistently result in pitiful crash landings."

"Nova Scotia's most beloved reptile is now 100 — or close enough for a party. Gus the gopher tortoise has been in residence at the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History in Halifax since 1942. While his actual hatching day is lost to history, August seems like the right time to celebrate."

  • 'We were the first': How Giovanni's Shrimp Truck started a food craze across Hawaii (SFGATE) "Drive the two-lane highway of Oahu’s North Shore and you’ll discover a Hawaii foodie phenomenon. From Haleiwa to Kahuku, this coastline — most known for its big waves — is also famous for its garlic shrimp."

Humans are heading back to the moon — and Canada is playing a bigger role than you may realize (CBC) CANADIAN STORY #GoCanada "If all goes as planned, NASA's most powerful rocket yet will roar to life on the morning of Aug. 29, as part of the Artemis I mission to the moon [...] The mission of Artemis I is to test the SLS rocket and the Orion capsule. But after that comes Artemis II, scheduled for 2024 or 2025, when four astronauts will travel in Orion and orbit the moon. On that capsule will be a yet-unnamed Canadian astronaut — the first to travel to deep space. NASA also has plans to build the Lunar Gateway, a small space station that will orbit the moon. Canada is contributing the Canadarm3, built by MDA, to that project — and the new arm is much more sophisticated than the originals."

  2. Ottawa to offer passport pickup service in 4 additional cities, says more locations coming (CBC) CANADIAN STORY This is such good news. To have these bottlenecks as we come out of the pandemic has been a double-whammy. "The federal government plans to open four new passport pickup locations nationally as it struggles to manage lengthy wait times and backlogs that have plagued the application process for months now. The new application and pickup service will be available in Trois-Rivières, Que.; Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; Charlottetown, P.E.I.; and Red Deer, Alta."

  3. These TikTokers are inspiring youth from Vancouver and Toronto to move to Calgary (CBC) CALGARY STORY Ha, I hope you are paying attention Calgary Economic Development. "When Umar and Atefah Khan moved to Calgary from Toronto in May, they created the Tiktok account @toronto2calgary to document their journey. It all started when they began posting about their three-day cross-country road trip to update friends and family back home. The Khans say they didn't know where their TikTok account would take them — but now, with nearly 100,000 total likes on their videos, they're inspiring others to make the same journey."

  4. SickKids recommends parents, caregivers of patients get prescription for children's pain and fever medications (CBC) CANADIAN STORY #Yikes! "SickKids Hospital said Tuesday that a recent letter sent to parents and caregivers about possible complications getting some children's over-the-counter fever and pain medicine was not meant to suggest that prescriptions would be required for all liquid acetaminophen and ibuprofen. The Toronto hospital says Monday's letter was not meant for the general public but was a reminder to parents and caregivers of its patients to get a prescription for those drugs — sold under the brand names Tylenol and Advil — from their SickKids doctor 'to help ensure access.' Though normally available over the counter, because of what the hospital called a nationwide shortage, some drug stores might only have those drugs in 'large quantities that must be dispensed by a pharmacist' for at-home use, the hospital said."

One wolf still at large after animals escape in 'suspicious' incident, says Greater Vancouver Zoo (CBC) VANCOUVER STORY #Eek "The Greater Vancouver Zoo asked for help Tuesday recapturing wolves that had escaped their enclosure, B.C.'s Environment Ministry said. The ministry said in a statement that the Conservation Officer Service was dispatched and one wolf remains unaccounted for. In a statement posted to its website, the Greater Vancouver Zoo — located about 55 kilometres east of Vancouver in the Aldergrove community of the Township of Langley — said it asked police to look into what happened Tuesday morning, as the incident was deemed 'suspicious, and believed to be due to malicious intent.'"

  7. Construction crews start work on downtown Saskatoon library (CTV) SASKATOON STORY Congrats! ViTreo is proud to be working with the Saskatoon Public Library. "Work on Saskatoon’s new central library is underway.   8. Trans Mountain names Dawn Farrell new CEO and president (Calgary Herald) CANADIAN STORY "Farrell was most recently president and CEO of TransAlta Corp. before retiring in March 2021. She is tasked with overseeing the contentious Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, a project that has almost tripled its budget since the federal government acquired it in 2018. In February, the company announced the new projected cost of the pipeline was $21.4 billion."

  9. Canada's newest coin pays tribute to Oscar Peterson (CBC) CANADIAN STORY Lovely tribute to a great artist. "Montreal pianist and jazz musician Oscar Peterson is being honoured with a commemorative coin, released today. Peterson, who died in 2007, was one of Canada's most decorated musicians and is remembered as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. The Royal Canadian Mint is issuing the $1 commemorative circulation coin to honour Peterson's 'extraordinary talent and enduring musical legacy.'"

  10. Calgary Stampede Showband crowned international class champions in Indiana (CBC) CALGARY STORY Congrats to all! "Last week, the Calgary Stampede Showband drove down to Indiana to compete in the Drum Corps International (DCI) Championships for the first time — the world stage for marching ensembles. [Recently], they were named international class champions in Marion, Indiana, launching them to the world championship in Indianapolis on Thursday. 'The organization has worked really hard to get to this point and put in a lot of hours, not only in rehearsal, but in design and bringing together the right membership,' said showband instructor, Josh Malate."

An 'incredible' $500M donation jump-starts UCSF's plans for a new patient-centered hospital (Fierce Healthcare) #Wow "A $500 million donation will help the University of California, San Francisco accelerate plans to build a new hospital at its Parnassus Heights campus. UCSF Health patients are currently treated in one of two buildings at Parnassus Heights—the Moffit and Long hospitals—and at an ambulatory surgery center. The Moffit building, which was first built in 1955, must be rebuilt by 2030 to meet seismic codes, and the Helen Diller Foundation donation will allow that process to begin a bit sooner, the university announced."

  3. Carleton University renames athletic stadium (CityNews) OTTAWA STORY "The Carleton University athletic stadium that's home to the Ravens football, soccer and rugby teams will be going by a new name. [Recently,] the university announced that its athletic stadium and field bordering Bronson Avenue will be renamed TAAG Park after a multi-year naming rights deal was struck with the Ottawa firm. According to a Carleton press release, The Andrew Abraham Group (TAAG) is a full-service accounting firm that offers a range of services including a multi-family office group."
